Hanoi to Ninh Binh: train, bus, limousine or private car?

Table des matières

Ninh Binh lies only about a hundred kilometres south of Hanoi, and for many of our travellers it is the first escape from the capital. Limestone peaks, rice paddies and rowing boats drifting through the caves of Tam Coc or Trang An: the scenery changes quickly, as long as you choose the right way to get there.

Since 2005, we have organised trips between Hanoi and Ninh Binh every week, by car, minibus or train. Here is what we have learned on the ground, with realistic travel times, indicative 2026 prices and a few tips to make the most of your visit.

What is the best way to get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh?

For most travellers the limousine minibus is the best balance, while a private car remains the most flexible choice for families and small groups.

Thanks to the Phap Van – Cau Gie – Ninh Binh expressway, the road is now faster than the railway. The train still has real charm and a very low fare, provided you accept an extra transfer on arrival. The table below sums up the options we recommend most often.

TransportDoor-to-door timeIndicative priceBest for
Private car with driver1 h 45 to 2 h 15About 60 to 90 USD per vehicleFamilies, seniors, small groups

Organised day tourReturn trip in one dayAbout 35 to 55 USD in a groupThose with only one day to spare

Prices rise during Tet and long Vietnamese weekends, when Hanoi residents also head to Ninh Binh. At those times, book at least a few days ahead.

How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh?

Allow around two hours by road from Hanoi’s Old Quarter, or just over two hours by train, not counting transfers to the sights.

The distance is roughly 95 kilometres. Outside rush hour, a car reaches Tam Coc in under two hours. The real variable is leaving Hanoi: between 7.30 and 9 am, and again between 4.30 and 7 pm, traffic in the south of the city can add half an hour or more, especially on Friday evenings.

For both train and bus, add the time needed to reach the station in Hanoi and then to get from Ninh Binh station to your hotel. That is why these options are slower overall than a minibus that picks you up at your door.

Is the train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh worth it?

Yes for rail lovers travelling light, as the ride is cheap and scenic, though you will need a taxi from the station on arrival.

All North-South Reunification trains linking Hanoi with Ho Chi Minh City stop at Ninh Binh. The journey takes between 2 h 15 and 2 h 45 depending on the train. We happily recommend it to travellers continuing south to Hue or Danang, as Ninh Binh then becomes a natural first stop.

Timetables, classes and booking

Trains leave from Hanoi Station on Le Duan Street, ten to fifteen minutes from the Old Quarter. There is usually an early departure around 6 am, another mid-morning, one in the early afternoon and several in the evening. Timetables change with the seasons, so always check the official Vietnam Railways website, dsvn.vn, or ask us.

  • Air-conditioned soft seat: about 110,000 to 200,000 VND, or 4 to 8 USD, plenty for a daytime ride
  • Berth in a 4- or 6-berth cabin: about 160,000 to 280,000 VND, only worth it if you want to lie down
  • Booking: on dsvn.vn with no fee, or through a resale platform for a small commission

Avoid the night trains: they reach Ninh Binh around 10 pm or later, when most homestays in Tam Coc have already closed reception.

From Ninh Binh station to Tam Coc or Trang An

The station is in the town centre, while most accommodation is out in the countryside. Tam Coc is about 7 to 8 kilometres away and Trang An around 10. A taxi costs roughly 100,000 to 150,000 VND, or 4 to 6 USD. Many hotels will also pick you up, so ask when you book.

Vietnamese Public train

Bus or limousine minibus: which should you choose?

The limousine minibus collects you from your hotel and drops you in Tam Coc, whereas the public bus means two separate taxi transfers.

Public buses from Hanoi’s bus stations

Buses mainly leave from Giap Bat bus station, but also from Nuoc Ngam and My Dinh. Departures are frequent from early morning to late afternoon, for 100,000 to 150,000 VND. They arrive at Ninh Binh bus station in town, where you still need a taxi. It is the cheapest option, but also the least comfortable with luggage.

Limousine minibuses from the Old Quarter

These nine- to eleven-seat vans with wide reclining seats have become the favourite choice of independent travellers. Pick-up in the Old Quarter is usually included, as is drop-off in Tam Coc, Trang An or near Mua Cave. Expect to pay 200,000 to 350,000 VND per person. The pick-up loop around the Old Quarter can take half an hour, so be ready in the lobby at the announced time.

Choose a well-established company and check the last departures: late-afternoon vans are often full on Fridays.

When is a private car with driver the better option?

A private car becomes the best option from three or four travellers, with children or if you want to stop freely along the way.

For two people, the price gap with the minibus is real. From three or four travellers it narrows sharply, and the comfort makes all the difference. It is the option we use for most of our tours.

  • You leave when it suits you, ideally early to arrive before the tour groups
  • You can stop on the way, for example at the Perfume Pagoda or a craft village
  • The driver waits for you if you return to Hanoi the same day
  • You can continue to Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay without going back through Hanoi

A full day with a driver, Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Hanoi, costs a little more than a one-way transfer, as the vehicle is tied up all day. Always ask whether tolls, fuel and the driver’s meal are included.

Can you get to Ninh Binh by motorbike or Grab?

Yes, with some caveats. Motorbikes are banned from the expressway and must use National Road 1A, busy with trucks, or quieter but longer back roads. Allow three to four hours. Riding in Vietnam requires an international driving permit issued under the 1968 convention, otherwise your insurance will not cover you in an accident. If the idea of a motorbike appeals, we much prefer an easy rider, a local driver who rides while you enjoy the scenery.

A Grab for the whole car is possible, for around 700,000 to 1,100,000 VND, or 28 to 45 USD, depending on vehicle size. The return trip is less certain: in Tam Coc or Trang An, it is common for no driver to accept the request.

Should you visit Ninh Binh as a day trip or stay overnight?

Staying one night makes all the difference: you enjoy the boats early in the morning or late in the day, once the groups have left.

On a day trip from Hanoi, you spend about four hours on the road and arrive at Trang An at the same time as every other group. It works if your schedule is tight, but we almost always recommend at least one night, which we include in our Northern Vietnam itineraries from 5 to 15 days.

  • One day is enough for a boat ride in Trang An or Tam Coc and the climb to Mua Cave
  • Two days let you add Hoa Lu, the ancient capital, cycling through the rice fields and Van Long nature reserve
  • Three days open up Cuc Phuong National Park or the coast, towards the Giao Thuy mangroves

Since the 2025 administrative reform, Ninh Binh province has absorbed Ha Nam and Nam Dinh, and the town itself has been reorganised. On the ground, the station and road signs still read Ninh Binh, so nothing changes for your journey.

What mistakes should you avoid on the Hanoi to Ninh Binh trip?

  • Leaving Hanoi too late: after 9 am, you arrive at the boat piers at peak time
  • Confusing Ninh Binh station with Tam Coc: the station is in town, nearly 8 kilometres from the rice fields
  • Booking a minibus at the last minute on a Friday or during Vietnamese holidays
  • Forgetting to check the exact drop-off point: some minibuses charge extra for Bai Dinh or Van Long
  • Relying on Grab for the return trip from the countryside without a backup plan

With a departure around 7 am and a place to stay near Tam Coc, you will experience Ninh Binh at its best, calm and bathed in soft morning light.
