Hanoi in one day: the best itineraries to explore the Vietnamese capital

Table des matières

Between the constant honking of scooters, the scent of fresh coriander, and shimmering reflections on peaceful lakes, Hanoi is a city to be experienced with all five senses.

If you only have one day to dedicate to it, rest assured: Vietnam’s capital reveals itself with intensity, blending spirituality, gastronomy, and traditions. We have designed four different itineraries for you: family-friendly, food-focused, historical, and off the beaten track.

Itinerary 1: Hanoi with the family

Here is a perfect itinerary for families.

Your driver will pick you up at your hotel in the Old Quarter and take you to the Ethnology Museum.

Ethnology Museum

Let’s start with a museum while the children are still fresh! And not just any museum: this one introduces you to the cultural mosaic of Vietnam. Inaugurated in 1997 by Jacques Chirac, it remains a leading reference in Southeast Asia. In the outdoor park, children will love exploring full-scale traditional houses: stilt houses, giant drums, thatched roofs… Inside, colorful costumes, ancient tools, handicrafts, and videos showcase the richness of the country’s 54 ethnic groups.

Lunch in Hanoi’s Old Quarter

You then return by car to the Old Quarter and head to a restaurant serving simple, flavorful dishes, quickly prepared. We recommend chả cá, Hanoi’s signature dish! Turmeric-fried fish (lăng or hemibagrus) served on a bed of dill and spring onions, enjoyed with grilled rice crackers, rice noodles (bún), fermented shrimp paste, and peanuts. Absolutely delicious!

Alternative if children don’t like fish: bún chả, another iconic Hanoi dish and one that travelers often remember long after leaving the capital. It consists of rice vermicelli, grilled pork, shallots, garlic, and a bowl of fish sauce with chili, papaya, and carrot. Everything is served with fresh herbs and a sweet-and-sour sauce. The rich flavor mainly comes from the charcoal-grilled pork.

Walk around Hoàn Kiếm Lake

After lunch, enjoy a gentle digestive walk around Hoàn Kiếm Lake, a peaceful setting where children can watch the fish, admire Ngọc Sơn Temple, or simply run around the lawns.

👉 Don’t miss: the famous Thê Húc red bridge, perfect for family photos and captivating legends to share with children.

Cyclo ride through Old Hanoi
After walking, let yourself be carried away by the charm of a cyclo ride through the lively streets of the Old Quarter. Comfortably seated at the front, you glide through commercial streets, observe daily life scenes, and admire old colonial houses without having to walk. It’s a slow, peaceful, and poetic experience—ideal after lunch. The driver, often smiling, is usually happy to share a few anecdotes about the city.

Ice cream at Trang Tien Ice Cream

How about a sweet break? On Trang Tien Street, you’ll find the main ice cream shop of the Trang Tien brand. Founded in 1958, this iconic institution is famous for its artisanal ice creams with traditional Vietnamese flavors.

Water puppet show

End the day at Thăng Long Theatre and enjoy a colorful traditional performance. The puppets dance on water, telling humorous and moving stories that captivate both children and adults. For more information, see our full article: Water Puppetry in Vietnam: Where to See the Shows?

If the children are not too tired, you can finish with a visit to the famous Train Street, watching the train pass safely from a café terrace.

Itinerary 2: Gourmet Hanoi

For those who want to taste Hanoi’s most famous dishes in just one day! Get ready for an extraordinary culinary immersion.

Traditional breakfast: Phở or Bánh cuốn
Start your day with a Vietnamese classic: a steaming phở bò (beef noodle soup) or bánh cuốn (steamed rice rolls filled with minced meat).

📍 Where? Phở Gia Truyền (49 Bát Đàn) or Bánh cuốn Bà Hanh (26B Thọ Xương)

Egg coffee in a historic café
Enjoy the famous egg coffee (cà phê trứng), a surprising blend of strong coffee topped with sweet, creamy egg foam—an authentic Hanoi specialty.

📍 Where? Giảng Café (39 Nguyễn Hữu Huân)

Sweet break: Chè or artisanal ice cream
While strolling through Hanoi’s Old Quarter, stop at a tea shop or ice cream parlor to discover Vietnamese desserts such as chè thập cẩm (sweet beans, jellies, coconut, crushed ice) or ice cream flavored with dragon fruit, black sesame, or durian.

📍 Where? Chè Bốn Mùa (4 Hàng Cân) or Kem Tràng Tiền (35 Tràng Tiền)

Local aperitif: bia hơi and skewers
Head to Tạ Hiện, the famous “beer street,” to enjoy a fresh bia hơi along with grilled pork skewers or fried tofu in a lively, local atmosphere.

Vietnamese gastronomic dinner
To end this gourmet day, savor one of Hanoi’s most emblematic specialties: chả cá, delicious grilled fish with dill, served with rice vermicelli and fresh herbs.
Where to eat good chả cá? On the street of the same name, of course—more precisely at Chả Cá Lã Vọng, number 14. This historic restaurant is said to have inspired local authorities to rename the street after the dish!

Itinerary 3: Historical Hanoi

Discover the Vietnamese capital through its iconic landmarks, from ancient traditions to French colonial elegance. A fully immersive itinerary for history and architecture lovers.

Ba Đình Square – Flag-raising ceremony

Start the day at the heart of modern Vietnamese history: Ba Đình Square, where Ho Chi Minh declared independence in 1945. Every morning at 6:00 a.m., a solemn flag-raising ceremony takes place, accompanied by the national anthem. Moving and symbolic.

Breakfast nearby
After the ceremony, enjoy a local breakfast at a nearby food stall: xôi xéo (sticky rice with mung bean paste), bánh mì, or bún riêu, paired with a strong Vietnamese coffee.

Tran Quoc Pagoda
Located on the shore of West Lake (Hồ Tây), Tran Quoc Pagoda is the oldest pagoda in Hanoi, founded in the 6th century. Calm, serenity, and refined architecture make it a spiritual and historical gem.

Temple of Literature

Step back in time at the Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu), founded in 1070. Once a university dedicated to Confucius, it is an iconic site of Vietnamese culture and education. Wander through its courtyards, pavilions, and stone steles resting on turtles.

Lunch

Settle into a nearby Vietnamese restaurant such as KOTO or Quán Ăn Ngon for a comfortable meal blending tradition and quality: bánh tôm, canh chua, cơm tấm…

Then head out to explore sites linked to the French presence in Vietnam.

Hanoi Opera House

An architectural masterpiece from the colonial era, the Hanoi Opera House, built between 1901 and 1911, was inspired by the Opéra Garnier in Paris. Even if the interior is not always accessible without a performance, the exterior is well worth a photo stop.

Crossing Long Biên Bridge

Built by the French at the end of the 19th century (by the Eiffel company), Long Biên Bridge is a powerful symbol of Hanoi’s urban history. Cross it on foot or by bicycle to feel its timeless charm.

End of the day at Serein Café & Lounge

Settle on the terrace of Serein Café, perched right next to Long Biên Bridge. Panoramic views over the railway tracks, a retro atmosphere, coffee with condensed milk or lotus tea—it’s the perfect moment to relax and watch the city change around you. A perfect spot to enjoy the sunset!

5:00 a.m. – Departure to Long Biên Market

Start your day before dawn at Long Biên Wholesale Market, the most vibrant in the capital.

All night long, traders bustle to supply the city. Upon arrival, you can capture unique scenes: street vendors stocking up to serve Hanoi’s neighborhoods.

This very early start allows you to experience the intense nocturnal atmosphere that keeps the heart of the capital beating.

Continue your exploration at Dong Xuan Market, one of Hanoi’s largest and most emblematic covered markets.

Capture the energy, vivid colors, and diversity of products at the peak of activity.

Local breakfast break

Enjoy a well-deserved break in the surrounding small streets with a typical Hanoi breakfast: phở, bánh mì, or Vietnamese coffee.

Around Hoàn Kiếm Lake

End your morning around Hoàn Kiếm Lake, the green lung of the Old Quarter.
