December marks the start of peak tourist season in Vietnam. The South basks in generous sunshine, the North takes on the first cool notes of winter, and the Centre emerges from its rainy season. It is a month of contrasts that we love, because it allows us to build very different journeys depending on what each traveller is looking for.
What is the weather like in Vietnam in December?
December is one of the best months to travel to Vietnam, as long as you know where to go by region.
December is one of the best months to travel to Vietnam — as long as you know where to go according to your expectations. The country stretches over more than 1,600 km from north to south, and weather conditions vary considerably from one region to another.
Northern Vietnam in December
In Hanoi and across the northern region, December is cool and dry. Temperatures range between 15 and 25°C during the day, with nights that can drop to around 10°C in the capital. In the mountains — Sapa, Ha Giang, Mu Cang Chai — it can be significantly colder, with the possibility of morning frost at altitude.
What we particularly appreciate about the North in December: the sky is clear, the light is beautiful, and the morning mist over the rice fields creates uniquely photogenic atmospheres. Hanoi in December, with its year-end decorations layered over traditional lanterns, becomes a city that is both surprising and deeply moving.

Central Vietnam in December
This is the region that requires the most careful planning. Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An are gradually coming out of their rainy season. At the start of the month, showers are still common. From mid-December onwards, the weather improves noticeably, with mild temperatures around 18 to 25°C and increasingly clear skies.
Our on-the-ground recommendation: if you are visiting Hoi An in December, plan your stay in the second half of the month to maximise the chances of good weather. The old town’s lights in the evenings, without the summer crowds, are genuinely worth the extra planning.

Southern Vietnam in December
Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc island enjoy ideal conditions in December. The rainy season has ended, the humidity drops, and the sun is present throughout the day. Temperatures hover around 25 to 30°C — warm without being oppressive. For beach lovers, this is the best time of year for the South.
| Region | Weather in December | Our assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi & the North | 15–25°C, dry, clear skies | ✅ Excellent |
| Ha Giang / Sapa mountains | 8–15°C, possible frost | ✅ Superb for trekking |
| Hue / Hoi An (Centre) | 18–25°C, improving from mid-month | ✅ Good from 15 December |
| Ho Chi Minh City (South) | 25–30°C, sunny and dry | ✅ Ideal |
| Phu Quoc island | 26–30°C, calm sea, clear water | ✅ Perfect |

Which destinations should you visit in Vietnam in December?
December opens Vietnam up in all its diversity, with several destinations standing out as priorities this month.
December opens Vietnam up in all its diversity. Here are the destinations we recommend as a priority this month.
Hanoi
The capital takes on a particular dimension in December. The cool air makes you want to wander through the Old Quarter, stop at a café for a cà phê trứng (egg coffee, a Hanoi speciality), or visit the Temple of Literature without the sweltering heat of summer. The year-end decorations add an unexpected touch of magic to this thousand-year-old city.
It is also an excellent time to head towards Lan Ha Bay — our junks sail in comfortable conditions, with a calm sea and a more serene atmosphere than during the summer high season.
Lan Ha Bay
December is one of our favourite seasons for boarding our junks. The sea is calm, the bays are less crowded than in July and August, and the sunsets over the karst formations take on particularly beautiful golden hues. If you have been hesitating between the famous Halong Bay and its quieter neighbour Lan Ha, December tips the scales clearly towards the more intimate option: fewer boats, preserved anchorages, a deeper sense of wilderness. Discover all our junk cruises on Lan Ha Bay.

Hoi An
The UNESCO-listed old town is particularly beautiful in December. The summer crowds have gone, the yellow-walled lanes regain their calm, and the Lantern Festival (on the 14th of each lunar month) still offers that unique spectacle of the river illuminated by a thousand floating lights. In December, the weather gradually improves — the second fortnight is generally sunnier. Take the time that summer does not allow: a cooking class in a traditional house, a bike ride through the rice fields around Tra Que village, an evening by the water without having to jostle for space.
Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc island is at its absolute best in December. The rainy season is over, the sea is perfectly calm, and the waters display the turquoise colour that has made the island’s reputation. It is the ideal month to combine a discovery of northern or central Vietnam with a beach extension in the South. Browse our Vietnam tours to see itineraries that include a Phu Quoc finale.
Sapa and the northern mountains
Sapa in December is an experience apart. The rice fields have lost their summer green, but the mountain landscapes take on austere, almost monochrome tones that are deeply evocative. It can be cold — bring warm layers — but the atmosphere in the villages of the ethnic minorities is particularly authentic outside the tourist season. An ideal destination for those seeking something well beyond the postcard.
What activities are best in December?
Trekking around Sapa or Pu Luong benefits from the cooler temperatures that make December especially comfortable.
- Trekking around Sapa or Pu Luong — the cool temperatures make physical effort far more comfortable, the skies are clear, and the ethnic minority villages have returned to their usual rhythm after the autumn tourist rush.
- Junk cruise in Lan Ha Bay — calmer seas, fewer boats, longer golden-hour light. December is one of our favourite months to set sail.
- Exploring Hanoi on foot — the cool weather is perfect for long walks through the Old Quarter, the French quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake.
- Christmas and New Year in Vietnam — Christmas is not a national holiday, but in the Catholic neighbourhoods of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City the atmosphere is genuinely festive: illuminations, improvised Christmas markets, midnight masses with thousands of faithful filling the streets. New Year’s Eve is celebrated in all major cities with fireworks. In Hanoi, the party centres around Hoan Kiem Lake. If you are on a junk cruise, a New Year’s Eve on deck in the middle of the bay is an experience in a category of its own.
What itineraries work best in December?
A 10-day tour focused on the South is one of the itineraries that works particularly well in December.
10-day tour — Making the most of the South in December
Hanoi (2 nights) → Lan Ha Bay cruise (1 night) → Ninh Binh (1 night) → Ho Chi Minh City (1 night) → Mekong Delta (2 nights) → Phu Quoc (3 nights)
A tour that combines culture, nature and beach in the best weather conditions of the month. The northern section benefits from cool, clear skies; Phu Quoc delivers turquoise water and a calm sea. A circuit we build often in December for travellers with around ten days available.
15-day tour — From North to South
Hanoi (2 nights) → Sapa (2 nights) → Lan Ha Bay cruise (1 night) → Ninh Binh (1 night) → Hue (2 nights) → Hoi An (3 nights) → Ho Chi Minh City (2 nights) → Phu Quoc (2 nights)
A classic itinerary, particularly well suited to December because each region is at its very best during this period. We recommend placing Hoi An in the second half of December to take advantage of the improving weather. What practical tips help when traveling to Vietnam in December?
December is high season in Vietnam, especially around Christmas and New Year, so booking early is essential.
Book early. December is high season — particularly around Christmas and New Year. Availability on junks, charming hotels in Hoi An and beach resorts in Phu Quoc fills up quickly. We recommend booking at least three months ahead if you are travelling over the year-end period.
Pack layers for the North. Hanoi, Sapa and Ha Giang can be genuinely cold in December. A fleece and a windproof jacket are essential. In the South, summer clothes are perfectly adequate.
Vietnamese New Year (Tet) is approaching. Tet 2027 falls on 17 January. If your trip extends into late December, you may start to notice the first preparations: flowers arriving in the markets, families shopping. A beautiful glimpse of everyday local life.
