Angkor temples and Tonle Sap Lake – 4 days tour

per person

The archaeological site of Angkor was the capital of the Khmer Empire, which ruled over the Indochinese Peninsula from the 9th to the 14th century AD.

Visiting the Angkor Temples is not just about exploring the remnants of a city but also several royal capitals, each of which radiated its influence over the empire for decades! It’s also an opportunity to immerse yourself in this civilization and try to understand the state cult known as devarāja.

Here is a comprehensive four-day itinerary to deeply explore the temples of Angkor, including the most famous ones like Angkor Wat, but also some less-visited ones like Banteay Srei (the Citadel of Women).

This itinerary will also take you to the countryside around Siem Reap to discover the fishing village of Kompong Pluk.

A wonderful extension after a tour of Northern to Southern Vietnam!

First, you will visit the Angkor Thom temple, primarily built by King Jayavarman VII at the end of the 12th century AD. The name Angkor Thom means "the great city." It stands as a testament to the grandeur of the empire. After lunch (on your own), you will explore Angkor Wat, a monumental complex built by Suryavarman II at the beginning of the 12th century. This city was the spiritual heart of the Khmer civilization at that time. With your guide, you will decipher the many symbols (numerous!) inscribed in its architecture. In the early evening, you will be taken to a dinner and dance show where you can experience the Apsara dance, a true symbol of Khmer culture. You will return to your hotel for the night.

After breakfast, you set out to explore the Kbal Spean River. You will walk along this river and through the forest. Along the way, you will discover sculptures symbolizing deities (Vishnu sleeping on a serpent, Nandin the bull, Shiva, and Uma). According to the beliefs of the time, the water flowing over these mythological scenes was sanctified. After lunch (on your own) along the way, you will visit the Banteay Srei temple (Citadel of Women), dedicated to Shiva, with its architecture and pink sandstone sculptures representing a masterpiece of Khmer art. In the afternoon, on the way back to Siem Reap, you will visit a palm sugar production site and the romantic temple of Banteay Samre, often referred to as the "Miniature Angkor Wat." Dinner on your own and overnight at the hotel in Siem Reap.
  • Included in the day: Breakfast, transportation by car with driver, services of a Khmer-speaking guide, entrance tickets, overnight at the hotel.
4
Kompong Pluk fishing village on Tonle Sap Lake (B)
After breakfast at your hotel, you will depart to explore the fishing village of Kompong Pluk, located 30 km from Siem Reap on the shores of Tonle Sap Lake. This village is home to approximately 2,500 people who maintain their unique way of life closely tied to the lake's rhythms. Depending on whether you visit the village during the dry season or the rainy season, it can have a completely different appearance. Here, tradition dictates changing homes with each season, residing in stilt houses during the wet season (when the water can reach up to six meters in height), then returning to the "ground floor" as the river begins to recede. Eventually, the village is entirely abandoned as the lake dries up, and people opt for small temporary huts built by the water's edge. Lunch is on your own in the village. Following this, you will be transferred to Siem Reap Airport for your flight.
  • Included in the day: Breakfast, transportation by car with driver, services of a Khmer-speaking guide, entrance tickets, transfer to the airport.
