Best Time to Visit Halong Bay: Weather, Seasons, and Travel Tips

A true symbol of Vietnam, Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered one of the eight natural wonders of the world. Its calm waters, dotted with thousands of limestone karsts covered in lush vegetation, create a spectacular and mesmerizing landscape — a unique setting where sky and sea meet.

Although the bay can be visited year-round, two periods stand out for enjoying it at its best: May, when the weather is pleasantly warm and crowds are still moderate before the summer, and October to November, when autumn brings milder, sunnier days and ideal cruising conditions.

In this article, we’ll break down each season and what to expect when taking a cruise through Halong Bay !

Climate in Halong Bay

Nestled in northeastern Vietnam, in the Gulf of Tonkin, Halong Bay is a true natural masterpiece. With its nearly 2,000 limestone islands and islets rising from emerald waters, its mysterious caves, and breathtaking landscapes, it captures the very essence of the country’s poetic charm. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, this natural wonder fascinates not only for its beauty but also for the legends that surround it. Between sky, sea, and stone, Halong Bay offers a timeless journey where every corner invites reflection and awe.

Halong Bay has a humid tropical climate, with two main seasons: hot and rainy from May to September, and cool and dry from November to March. Temperatures range between 15°C and 35°C, depending on the time of year. Summer brings frequent showers, while winter often sees light mist, light rain, and a peaceful atmosphere. The best times to visit are typically in spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November), when the weather is mild and cruising conditions are ideal.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Halong Bay?

Halong Bay in Spring (February – May)

Spring is a transitional season in Halong Bay, marked by gradual changes. Between late February and mid-April, the bay experiences a humid, misty, and often rainy period. This unstable weather—typical of late winter—can create a mysterious atmosphere, but it may also reduce visibility, especially during cruises and outdoor activities.

From mid-April onward, spring truly sets in: temperatures become more stable, ranging between 22°C and 28°C, rainfall decreases, and the skies begin to clear. This is the best springtime window to discover the bay in favorable conditions. The vegetation is lush and green, the calm waters are perfect for kayaking or swimming, and the landscapes take on a beautiful golden hue at sunset.

A word of caution: the period from mid-April to mid-May is part of the high tourist season, highly sought after for its ideal climate. It is strongly recommended to book your cruise 4 to 5 months in advance to secure the best cabins and availability—especially aboard small junks like ours.

Halong Bay in Summer (June – September)

Summer marks the rainy season in Northern Vietnam, and Halong Bay is no exception. From June to September, temperatures range between 28°C and 35°C, with high humidity and frequent showers that can occur at any time—sometimes brief, sometimes heavy. You should expect to get wet at least occasionally, though the rain often creates stunning contrasts of light across the limestone landscapes.

August and September also see the highest risk of typhoons, which may lead to cruise cancellations for safety reasons. That’s why we strongly recommend scheduling your Halong Bay cruise at the beginning of your trip: if weather conditions prevent departure, we’ll have time to reschedule it a few days later.

That said, summer remains a vibrant and spectacular season. Cruises are often more affordable, and the scenery takes on a striking intensity after the rain. Activities like kayaking, swimming, or night squid fishing are still very enjoyable when the weather cooperates. It’s a raw and powerful season, perfect for flexible travelers who embrace unpredictability and seek to experience the bay in a different light.

Halong Bay in Autumn (October – December)

Autumn, from October to December, is one of the best seasons to visit Halong Bay under optimal conditions. The weather is drier, temperatures are mild and pleasant, ranging between 22°C and 28°C, and the skies are often clear. The golden morning light, spectacular sunsets, and unobstructed landscapes make it an ideal time for photography or beach stops.

The sea remains warm enough for swimming, and sailing conditions are generally excellent. This is the perfect season to enjoy a peaceful cruise, in a serene atmosphere of blue skies, limestone karsts, and quietude after the summer crowds.

However, be aware that this is also a peak travel season. Quality cruises often get fully booked weeks or even months in advance. We highly recommend reserving your cruise as early as possible if you plan to visit Halong Bay in the fall.

Halong Bay in Winter (Late December – March)

Winter in Halong Bay stretches from late December to March. This period is marked by unpredictable weather: temperatures can drop, especially in January, with dry but cold days — often around 10 to 15 °C in the mornings and evenings. While the skies are often clear during the day, it’s important to dress warmly, especially on the deck of the boat where the breeze can make it feel even colder.

Late January to early February is the time of Tết, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. It’s a very special time filled with cultural traditions, but it’s also a tricky period logistically: some cruises stop operating or reduce their services. If you’re considering visiting during this time, we strongly recommend checking with us in advance to plan accordingly.

March is, statistically, the most visited month — even though it is often grey, humid, and rainy as spring approaches. You shouldn’t expect bright blue skies, but the misty atmosphere can give the bay a poetic and mysterious charm that some visitors find truly magical.

Conclusion: Halong Bay, a Year-Round Destination… or Almost!

As you’ve seen, Halong Bay can be visited year-round, with each season revealing a different facet of this natural wonder. However, two periods are more sensitive:

  • August and September, marked by a higher risk of typhoons, which can lead to cruise cancellations;
  • Late January to early February, during Tết (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), when many tourist services slow down or temporarily stop.

If your schedule allows, we highly recommend visiting between April–May or October–December: these are the best times to sail, with ideal weather conditions. They’re also peak seasons, so don’t wait too long to book!
