Cat Ba island

Located 145 km east of Hanoi, Cat Ba Island is part of an archipelago made up of 366 islands and islets.

While not exclusively a beach destination, the island offers a wide variety of activities—from exploring caves to trekking in the Cat Ba National Park, and of course, boarding a traditional junk cruise from Bến Bèo harbor to discover the stunning Lan Ha Bay.

That said, Cat Ba is also a perfect place to unwind after a trek through the mountains of Northern Vietnam. From the town center, you’ll have easy access to Cat Co 1, Cat Co 2, Cat Co 3, and Tung Thu beaches. What could be better than swimming in crystal waters while gazing at dramatic karst formations?

The best way to enjoy Cat Ba is to combine a traditional junk cruise in Lan Ha Bay with a few days of rest on the island’s beaches.

Plan your visit between May and June, before the rainy season begins. Avoid weekends, as many Hanoians flock to the island. October and November are also excellent months for great weather and fewer crowds.

Da Nang

Da Nang is one of Vietnam’s top seaside destinations—and for good reason. As you travel south from Northern Vietnam, it’s the first major beach city you’ll encounter.

Set between the sea and the mountains, Da Nang is one of the country’s five major municipalities (alongside Hanoi, Haiphong, Can Tho, and Ho Chi Minh City). It boasts over 90 kilometers of coastline, stretching from the Hai Van Pass to the Marble Mountains. Along this stretch lie some of Vietnam’s most beautiful beaches, including My Khe, Nam O, Xuan Thieu, Thanh Binh, Son Tra, Bac My An, and Non Nuoc.

Numerous hotels and resorts line the coast, offering a wide range of accommodation options. Many of them even include private beach access, giving you the chance to relax in peace.

With beach tourism thriving in the area, you’ll also find plenty of water sports on offer—scuba diving, kitesurfing, jet skiing, and more.

Home to nearly 1 million residents, Da Nang is also a vibrant city with a rapidly growing nightlife scene, much to the delight of travelers looking for fun after sunset.

A great choice for those seeking a mix of relaxation and entertainment.

Hoi An is the perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and coastal charm.

While its UNESCO-listed Old Town and renowned gastronomy draw many visitors, the surrounding beaches offer a relaxing escape just minutes away.

Cua Dai Beach, closest to town, hosts luxury resorts like Palm Garden with private beach access and water sports. An Bang, the most popular beach, features a mix of charming homestays and boutique hotels such as the French-run An Bang Beach Hotel.

For a quieter experience, Ha My Beach—between Hoi An and Da Nang—offers peaceful seclusion and simple yet comfortable accommodations.

For the ideal stay, spend a night or two in the Old Town, then unwind by the sea.

Quy Nhon

Located in Binh Dinh Province, Quy Nhon is a coastal city historically rooted in agriculture and fishing. In recent years, it has become an increasingly popular beach destination among both Vietnamese and international travelers—especially seafood lovers drawn by its culinary reputation.

In summer, Quy Nhon reveals its full charm, with crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and scenic island excursions. The city remains peaceful compared to other beach hotspots, making it ideal for a relaxing getaway.

Direct flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are available with Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, and Bamboo Airways.

Nha Trang

Nha Trang is arguably the most well-known beach resort city in Vietnam, offering something for every type of traveler. The city can be divided into three main areas:

Central Nha Trang is right by the sea and packed with hotels for all budgets, making it a favorite among backpackers—especially since the beach is just steps away, who needs a hotel pool?

Northern Nha Trang is home to high-end resorts catering to a more upscale clientele. If your budget allows, the Amiana Resort & Villas is a top pick, featuring multiple pools and its own private beach.

Southern Nha Trang is a rapidly growing area, lined with beachfront resorts ideal for a tranquil escape.

For a well-rounded trip, pair your beach stay with a visit to My Son Sanctuary, the former spiritual capital of the Champa Kingdom, or explore Po Nagar Cham Towers, built in 781 to honor the goddess Yan Po Nagar, the kingdom’s legendary founder.

Vung Tau

Once known as Cap Saint Jacques during the French colonial era, Vung Tau is the go-to beach destination for residents of Ho Chi Minh City.

Formerly an important seaport, the town still bears traces of its colonial past—most notably the White Villa (Bạch Dinh), built by Paul Doumer, then Governor of Indochina and future President of France.

Today, Vung Tau offers warm waters, long stretches of white sand, and a lively seafood and local beer scene. It’s a great stopover if you’re heading to the Central Highlands, or simply looking for a quick seaside break.

All of it watched over by the towering statue of Christ, perched atop a hill with panoramic views of the bay.

Mui Ne

Located in the commune of Phan Thiet, halfway between Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne is a favorite spot for lovers of outdoor sports. Thanks to its steady coastal winds, it’s a year-round destination for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and other water sports.

But Mui Ne is also famous for its otherworldly sand dunes, where you can try sandboarding or simply enjoy the surreal desert-like scenery—now a popular backdrop on Instagram. A cool destination for cool travelers!

Frequented by Ho Chi Minh City locals on weekends and a long-time favorite among Russian tourists, the area is filled with hotels, beach bars, and restaurants—don’t be surprised to find menus in Russian!

On a budget or traveling with family? Try Mui Ne Xua Cafe Hostel for a cozy, affordable stay. Looking for something more upscale? The Pandanus Resort offers beautiful beachfront bungalows and top-notch service.

Phu Quoc island

Located at the southern tip of Vietnam, Phu Quoc is the country’s largest island. Officially part of Kien Giang Province, it became Vietnamese territory only in the mid-19th century.

So, what to do on Phu Quoc? First and foremost—relax and enjoy the beaches. We recommend Bai Truong on the southwest coast, Bai So and Bai Dam in the southeast, and the wilder coves of Bai Ong Lang in the north. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also popular, with several spots around the island offering warm, shallow waters teeming with tropical fish and colorful coral reefs.

Phu Quoc is also home to a natural park, perfect for a forest hike in the island’s northern region. Other activities include visiting a Cao Dai temple built in 2008, and exploring local pepper farms, pearl farms, and more.

Con Dao island

The Con Dao archipelago consists of 16 islands, but only one—Con Son—is inhabited. While today it looks like a tropical paradise, the island has a darker past. Renamed “Poulo Condore” by French colonizers, it was one of the most notorious prison islands in Indochina starting in 1862, where political opponents were detained. You can still visit some of the former prison sites, such as Phu Tuong Camp and Phu Hai Prison.

If you’re not superstitious (many Vietnamese avoid the island due to its reputation for ghosts), you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous beaches like Lo Voi near the town center, and Dam Trau in the north. More secluded spots like Ong Dung and Dam Tre Bay are also worth the effort.

Con Dao is a diving hotspot, with vibrant coral reefs surrounding the island, home to colorful fish, sea turtles, and even the occasional dolphin.

The island is also home to a 20,000-hectare national park, offering great hiking trails. Entry costs 60,000 VND (about $2.50 USD) per person, and you can pick up an English hiking map at the park office.
