Founded in the 14th century, Luang Prabang was once the capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom, whose name can be translated as the “Land of a Million Elephants.” For nearly three centuries, the city flourished as a major spiritual, political, and cultural center of Southeast Asia, blending Buddhist traditions with royal heritage.
During this three-day journey, you will uncover the city’s fascinating past while immersing yourself in its timeless charm: from ancient temples and royal landmarks to vibrant local life and the natural wonders surrounding Luang Prabang.
This itinerary can easily be combined with a longer tour in Vietnam, offering travelers the opportunity to extend their adventure across two of Indochina’s most captivating destinations.
Welcome at Luang Prabang Airport, then transfer to your hotel for check-in and lunch.
In the afternoon, visit Vat Xieng Thong, the most beautiful temple in the city, built in the 16th century; Vat Visounarat with its “Watermelon Stupa,” and nearby Vat Aham. Continue with a climb up Mount Phu Si to admire the sunset over the city.
On the way back, stop at the colorful night market. Overnight at the hotel.
A full day of exploration awaits you. After breakfast, embark on a boat cruise to the Pak Ou Caves, located 32 km upstream. On the way, stop at the “whisky village” to see how Lau Lao, the traditional rice whisky, is made. Continue to the caves for a one-hour visit, where thousands of Buddha images are stored.
Afterwards, take a car ride through a lush forest to reach the Kuang Si Waterfalls. On the way, stop at a Hmong village.
On the return journey, visit Ban Xang Khong village, famous for its weaving and handmade mulberry paper.
Overnight at the hotel in Luang Prabang.
Very early in the morning, around 5:45 AM, depart by private car to Ban Vat Sean to witness the morning alms-giving ceremony to Buddhist monks, a long procession of saffron robes.
Return to the hotel for breakfast and check-out, followed by a visit to the Royal Palace Museum before your transfer to the airport.
