The archaeological site of Angkor was once the capital of the Khmer Empire, which ruled over the Indochinese peninsula from the 9th to the 14th century AD.
Visiting the Temples of Angkor means exploring not just the remains of a single city, but of several successive royal capitals, each of which flourished for decades at the heart of the Empire. It is also about immersing yourself in this fascinating civilization and seeking to understand the state cult known as devarāja.
This four-day itinerary allows you to explore Angkor in depth: from the world-famous Angkor Wat to lesser-visited gems such as Banteay Srei, the “Citadel of Women.”
The program also takes you into the countryside around Siem Reap, where you will discover the floating fishing village of Kompong Pluk on the Tonle Sap Lake.
A wonderful extension after a journey through Vietnam from North to South!
Arrival at Siem Reap Airport. You will be welcomed by our guide and driver, then transferred to your hotel in Siem Reap. Dinner at your leisure and overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel, then the day is dedicated to exploring the most impressive sites of Angkor. You will first visit Angkor Thom, built mainly by King Jayavarman VII at the end of the 12th century. The name Angkor Thom means “the Great City,” and it stands as a testimony to the grandeur of the Empire.
After lunch (at your leisure), you will discover Angkor Wat, the monumental complex built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. This vast city was the spiritual heart of the Khmer civilization at the time. With your guide, you will decipher the many symbolic details carved into its architecture.
In the early evening, you will be taken to enjoy a dinner show featuring the Apsara dance, a true symbol of Khmer culture. Return to your hotel for overnight stay.
After breakfast, depart to discover the Kbal Spean River. You will walk along the river and through the forest. Along the way, you will see sculptures symbolizing deities such as Vishnu reclining on a serpent, Nandi the bull, Shiva, and Uma. According to ancient beliefs, the water flowing over these mythological carvings was considered sacred.
After lunch (at your leisure) along the way, you will visit Banteay Srei Temple (Citadel of Women), dedicated to Shiva. Its pink sandstone architecture and intricate carvings are considered a masterpiece of Khmer art.
In the afternoon, on the return road to Siem Reap, stop to see how palm sugar is made and visit the romantic Banteay Samre Temple, often nicknamed the “miniature Angkor Wat.”
Dinner at your leisure and overnight at the hotel in Siem Reap.
After breakfast at your hotel, set out to discover the fishing village of Kompong Pluk, located about 30 km from Siem Reap on the shores of Tonle Sap Lake. This village is home to around 2,500 people who continue to live a remarkable lifestyle entirely tied to the rhythms of the lake.
Depending on whether you visit during the dry season or the rainy season, the village takes on a completely different appearance. Here, houses are adapted to the water level: during the rainy season, families live in high stilt houses, as the water can rise up to six meters. When the river begins to recede, people return to the “ground floor” of their homes, before eventually moving out entirely as the lake dries up, settling into small temporary huts built on the water’s edge.
Lunch at leisure in the village. Afterwards, transfer to Siem Reap Airport for your departure flight.
