This 10-day tour takes you to discover Vietnam’s most stunning terraced rice fields, ranked among the most spectacular landscapes in Asia. From Mu Cang Chai to Hoang Su Phi, passing through the remote valleys of Bac Haand Ta Phin, you will cross majestic mountains and meet local ethnic communities (H’mong, Dao, Tay…).

Between treks through golden rice terraces, overnights with local hosts, and exploring vibrant traditional markets, this journey offers a full immersion into the authentic culture and breathtaking scenery of Northern Vietnam. Ideal between June and October, when the rice is growing and the mountains are adorned with their most beautiful shades.

Itinerary

Day 1
Hanoi - arrival and city tour (L)

Arrival at Hanoi airport at 06:35. Meet your guide and driver, then transfer to your hotel to drop off your luggage. You will start the day gently with a cyclo ride through the Old Quarter of Hanoi, followed by a walking tour to explore some of its main streets and the Ngoc Son Temple on the shores of Hoan Kiem Lake.

Lunch will be served in a local specialty restaurant where you will taste Bun Cha Nem (a noodle soup with grilled pork and spring rolls). In the early afternoon, you will check into your rooms and enjoy some time to rest.

In the afternoon, you can choose between two visits:

  • The Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, now a temple dedicated to Confucius,
    or

  • The Museum of Ethnology, which offers a fascinating insight into the cultural diversity of Vietnam’s ethnic groups.

Day 2
Hanoi - Duong Lam - Nghia Lo (B, L, D)

08:00: Your guide and driver will pick you up to head towards Duong Lam Village (Mong Phu), a typical village of the Red River Delta, considered the cradle of Viet (Kinh) civilization. This village is renowned for its ancestral houses, some of which have been in the same family for over 300 years. There, you will visit the communal house and Mia Pagoda, followed by a traditional lunch in one of the village’s ancient homes.

In the afternoon, you will take Route 32, crossing hilly landscapes of tea plantations before driving over the Khe Pass. By the end of the day, you will arrive in Muong Lo, a Thai ethnic town nestled in a vast plain of rice fields—the second largest in the North after Dien Bien Phu—surrounded by majestic mountains.

Day 3
Nghia Lo - Mu Cang Chai (B, L)

After breakfast with your host, set off for Mu Cang Chai via Nga Ba Kim. The winding road snakes through mountains rising over 2,000 meters, offering spectacular views of terraced rice fields. You’ll pass through the H’mong village of Nga Ba Kim before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, visit La Pan Tan village, famous for its breathtaking terraced fields. Enjoy a two-hour hike leading to Cau Ba Nha, a village perched on the hills with stunning panoramic views. Along the way to Mu Cang Chai, admire magnificent landscapes and, if time and interest allow, stop for a short walk in Phinh Ho village.

Day 4
Mu Cang Chai - Sapa - Ta Phin (B, L, D)

Day 5
Ta Phin - Hang Da - Bac Ha (B, L)

After breakfast, transfer by car to the starting point of today’s hike. The route is more challenging than the previous day but rewards you with spectacular, off-the-beaten-path landscapes—perfect for a full immersion in nature.

Lunch at a local restaurant.

At the end of the hike, depart for Bac Ha. The journey winds through stunning mountain scenery and offers glimpses of the region’s diverse ethnic villages. Arrive in Bac Ha by late afternoon.

Dinner on your own and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6
Bac Ha - Xi Man - Hoang Su Phi (B, L, D)

Depending on the day of your visit, you can explore one of the weekly local minority markets around Bac Ha: Coc Ly Market (Tuesday), Sin Cheng (Wednesday), Lung Phinh (Friday), Can Cau (Saturday), or Muong Khuong or Bac Ha (Sunday).

These vibrant markets are essential meeting points for ethnic minority groups, who come to exchange goods, news, and traditional know-how. You’ll also witness the bustling livestock market, where buffaloes, horses, dogs, and even cats are traded—a unique and traditional practice.

After the visit, continue your journey to Hoang Su Phi, one of the most unspoiled areas in Ha Giang province, renowned for its breathtaking mountain landscapes and terraced rice fields.

Arrive in the afternoon at Pan Hou, an Eco Lodge nestled in the heart of nature, where traditional bungalows blend harmoniously with the mountains and rice terraces of Hoang Su Phi valley.

End of the day at leisure to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Eco Lodge.

Day 7
Hoang Su Phi (B, L, D)

Breakfast at your lodge, then set off for a two-day trekking adventure. Enjoy a picnic lunch, followed by dinner and overnight stay with a local family from the Black Dao ethnic group.

Day 8
Hoang Su Phi (B, L, D)

Breakfast with your hosts, then continue your trek toward Ho Pien village. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way, followed by dinner and overnight stay with another Black Dao family for a deeper cultural experience.

Day 9
Hoang Su Phi - Thac Ba Lake (B, L, D)

After breakfast, depart by car from Hoang Su Phi to Vu Linh, a charming village located on the shores of Thac Ba Lake. The scenic drive takes you through dramatic mountain landscapes, deep valleys, stunning terraced rice fields, and remote ethnic villages.

Along the way, stop to meet a Dao or Tay community, where you’ll have the opportunity to learn about their traditional way of life, customs, and local handicrafts.

Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant or with a host family, featuring regional specialties prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

Afternoon – Discover Thac Ba Lake
Upon arrival in Vu Linh, home to the White Dao ethnic group, embark on a boat trip across Thac Ba Lake, one of Vietnam’s largest artificial lakes. Glide past lush green islets and floating villages, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and pristine nature.

Return to shore and settle into a traditional stilt house for a true cultural immersion.
Evening at leisure to relax, take a stroll around the village, or share a convivial dinner with your host family.

Day 10
Thac Ba Lake - Hanoi (B, L)

Breakfast at your homestay, then depart for Hanoi.
Arrive in Hanoi in the afternoon.
