Overview

Parfum d’Automne invites you on a journey to discover Vietnam from North to South, along with the Angkor site in Cambodia.

This trip is designed for travelers visiting Vietnam for the first time and who wish to explore its must-see destinations while traveling from North to South.

In the North, you will sail through Lan Ha Bay aboard one of our traditional junks before discovering the Inland Halong Bay (Ninh Binh) and the northern mountains. Our guide will take you to Mu Cang Chai, a less touristy area that boasts some of the most stunning landscapes in Northern Vietnam.

You will then head to Central Vietnam to visit the cities of Hue and Hoi An. Our guides will introduce you to the rich culture of the Champa civilization in the Hoi An region. Finally, you will explore the Mekong Delta, which will captivate you with its vibrant local life along the longest river in Southeast Asia.

Next, you will travel to Cambodia to discover the Angkor site, a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. Three full days of exploration of both famous and lesser-known temples await you, accompanied by a English-speaking guide who will share the fascinating history of the Khmer Empire.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Hanoi and exploration of the Old Quarter (B)

Arrival at Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport. Meet our driver and guide, then transfer to the hotel. You will leave your luggage at the hotel (room available from 1:00 PM). Lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, enjoy a discovery tour of Hanoi’s Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake. You will learn about the history of Hanoi’s Old Quarter and its traditional guilds, while our guide takes you through its narrow streets, full of surprises—perfect for soaking in the atmosphere of Hanoi from day one!

Among the visits, you will explore the surroundings of Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple located on a small island, and the Dong Xuan Market. The afternoon will end with a traditional water puppet show, where, accompanied by our guide, you will discover fascinating Vietnamese legends.

Day 2
Hanoi – Historical and Cultural Discovery (B, L)

You will have breakfast at your hotel or at Parfum d’Automne Guest House. Our guide and driver will pick you up to continue discovering the highlights of Hanoi.

The morning will be dedicated to Vietnamese history, with visits to the Temple of Literature (a symbol of Confucianism) and Tran Quoc Pagoda (the oldest Buddhist pagoda in Hanoi). After lunch at a local restaurant, you will visit the Museum of Ethnology, which houses an impressive collection of information on the 54 ethnic groups that inhabit Vietnam.

In the early evening, we recommend attending My Village (optional), a spectacular show combining dance and circus performances—children will love it!

Day 3
Hanoi - Duong Lam - Nghia Lo (B, L, D)

Today marks the beginning of your journey to the North! After breakfast, your driver and guide will pick you up at the hotel. You’ll take the road and make your first stop at Duong Lam Village (Mong Phu), a traditional village that embodies the culture of the Red River Delta inhabitants, considered the cradle of Vietnamese (Kinh) civilization. The village is famous for its ancient houses, many of which have belonged to the same families for over 300 years.

You will visit some of these historic homes and enjoy lunch in one of them. Continue with a visit to the communal houseand Mia Pagoda.

In the afternoon, the journey continues north as you enter a landscape of increasingly higher hills covered with tea plantations. You’ll cross the Khé Pass and arrive by the end of the day in the Thai ethnic town of Muong Lo, nestled in a vast rice plain surrounded by towering mountains—the largest in the North after Dien Bien Phu.

Day 4
Nghia Lo - Mu Cang Chai (B, L, D)

After breakfast, you will continue your journey to Mu Cang Chai, passing through the Hmong village of Nga Ba Kim. The drive takes you through stunning mountain scenery, surrounded by peaks over 2,000 meters high, overlooking magnificent terraced rice fields. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, enjoy a hike and visit La Pan Tan Village, renowned for having some of the most beautiful terraced rice fields in the North, before reaching Cau Ba Nha Village (about 2 hours of walking). From there, you’ll return to the car and continue on to Mu Cang Chai.

Along the way, you’ll discover breathtaking landscapes, with the possibility to take short walks depending on time and your preference (especially around Phin Ho Village). You will arrive in Mu Cang Chai by late afternoon.

Dinner and overnight stay with a local family or at the Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge.

Day 5
Mu Cang Chai - Hanoi (B, L)

After breakfast at the ecolodge or homestay, you will head out to visit and take photos in the Che Cu Nha area (about 2 hours of walking). You will leave the district no later than 1:00 PM. Arrival in Hanoi in the early evening. Dinner on your own and overnight at the Parfum d’Automne Guest House or at a hotel in Hanoi.

Included in the day: Breakfast and lunch, car rental with driver, services of a English-speaking Vietnamese guide, and overnight stay in Hanoi.

Day 6
Hanoi - Ninh Binh (B, L)

After breakfast at the Guest House or hotel, depart with your guide for Dong Dinh Village, near the Kenh Ga Nature Reserve. Enjoy an off-the-beaten-path bike ride through the villages, from 5 km to 15 km depending on your preference, followed by a boat trip or a walk to discover the stilt village of Dong Dinh and meet its inhabitants. Lunch at Mrs. Mien’s house.

In the afternoon: take a traditional boat ride through the scenic sites of Van Long or Trang An (according to your choice). Dinner on your own and overnight at a hotel in Tam Coc.

Day 7
Ninh Binh - Cat Ba Island - Lan Ha Bay (B, L, D)

The driver will pick you up at your hotel around 8:00 AM, heading to Cat Ba Island! First, you will take a ferry to reach the island. After the ferry, to get to Cat Ba town (about 30 km away), where our junk boat is located, we offer an off-the-beaten-path one-hour motorbike ride with a driver. If you prefer not to experience the motorbike ride, you can take the bus instead.

Around 12:30 PM, you will board our traditional boat, La Majonq. The cruise first passes through the Hang Vem fishing village in Lan Ha Bay. Sailing with the wind is possible depending on the weather conditions. Take this opportunity to relax, swim, and enjoy the sun on deserted beaches (weather permitting). You will also have the chance to go kayakingand visit a fishing village.

Lunch and dinner will be served on board, featuring freshly purchased seafood such as fish, shrimp, squid, and shellfish directly from local fishermen. You will spend the night on board in a quiet cove in the middle of Lan Ha Bay.

Included in the day: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, private car with driver, English-speaking guide, ferry tickets, Lan Ha Bay entrance fees, motorbike transfer across Cat Ba Island, boat rental, activities, and overnight stay on the junk boat.

Day 8
Lan Ha Bay - Hanoi - Hue (B, L)

Breakfast on board the junk before starting the morning program you will have chosen with your guide the previous day: a 2-hour bike ride to Viet Hai Village or a cruise in the bay with swimming on a beach. Lunch will be served either on the junk or in a local restaurant. Return to Cat Ba Island around 12:30 PM to take the bus or car (according to your choice).

Transfer to Hanoi Airport for the flight to Hue. Upon arrival in Hue, meet your driver (no guide) and transfer to the city. Dinner on your own and overnight at the hotel.

Included in the day: Breakfast, lunch, private car with driver, guide, entrance tickets, accommodation, and one small bottle of water per person.

Day 9
Discovery of Hue (B, L)

After breakfast, take a sampan boat ride to visit Thien Mu Pagoda and the mausoleum of Emperor Tu Duc (or Minh Mang or Khai Dinh, depending on your choice). Enjoy a vegetarian lunch at Lien Hoa Pagoda.

In the afternoon, explore the Imperial City of Hue, including the Noon Gate, the Palace of Supreme Harmony, the Royal Reading Pavilion, and the temples of the Nguyen dynasty.

Dinner at your leisure and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 10
Hue - Danang - Hoi An (B, L)

Departure from Hue to Hoi An, passing by the stunning Lang Co Lagoon and the Hai Van Pass (Cloud Pass). Visit either the Cham Museum or Linh Ung Pagoda (according to your preference). Lunch at a local restaurant in Danang. Continue the drive to Hoi An.

In the afternoon, explore Hoi An’s Old Town: the former fishing port of Faifo, the traditional market, the Japanese Covered Bridge, the Chinese temple, the ancient Tan Ky House, and more. Dinner on your own and overnight in Hoi An.

Day 11
Hoi An - My Son - Hoi An (B, L)

After breakfast, depart for My Son, nicknamed the “Valley of the Kings,” located on the site of the capital of the Champa Kingdom, which flourished until the 10th century. Visit the archaeological site. Lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, you can choose between:

  • Free time to relax on the beach;
  • A bike ride to Cam Thanh Village, where you will meet the locals and discover their daily life.

Dinner on your own and overnight at the hotel.

Day 12
Hoi An - Danang - Ho Chi Minh City (B, L)

After breakfast, transfer to Da Nang Airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Upon arrival, meet your driver and guide for a transfer to the city. Lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, visit the Museum of Traditional Medicine, the Municipal Theater, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, the Reunification Palace, Thien Hau Pagoda, and Ngoc Hoang Pagoda. Discover the art of lacquerware making, then enjoy a walk through Chinatown (Cho Lon). Dinner on your own and overnight at the hotel.

Day 13
Ho Chi Minh City - My Tho - Ben Tre - Thoi Son (B, L, D)

Departure from your hotel after breakfast for a 1 hour 15 minute drive to My Tho, the first gateway to the Mekong, located 70 km south of Saigon. During the journey, your English-speaking guide will share insights about Saigon, daily life in Vietnam, the Mekong River, the Indochina and Vietnam wars, as well as historical and cultural ties between France and Vietnam, and answer all your questions.

Upon arrival in My Tho, visit Vinh Trang Pagoda, the oldest and most sacred in the region. Here, you will learn about Vietnamese Buddhism, as well as Taoism and Confucianism—three philosophies deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture—along with the ancestral worship tradition.

Next, head to the pier and board a private junk boat to cross the Upper Mekong and sail around Dragon and Unicorn Islands in Ben Tre Province. Small sampans will then take you through narrow arroyos, where you will be amazed by the lush vegetation of coconut palms and nipa palms. Disembark at Tan Thach Hamlet and take a short walk to the village restaurant for a lunch of Mekong specialties amid fruit orchards.

After lunch, board the sampans again for a 20-minute ride to a neighboring village. There, enjoy local fruits and honey tea, then hop on a bike for a 2-hour ride along scenic paths through rice fields, orchards, and coconut groves. At the end of the ride, take a rowboat trip through the arroyos. Finally, return by boat to My Tho port. Your car will pick you up and drop you off 3 km away at Binh Duc pier, where a sampan will take you to Thoi Son Island. Overnight stay either at a homestay or a hotel, according to your choice.

Note: If you choose the homestay option, dinner is included; if you stay at the hotel, dinner is not included.

Day 14
Vinh Long - Cai Be - Ho Chi Minh City (B, L)

After breakfast, cross the river by boat, then take a 1-hour drive to Cai Bè, a river port where you will embark on a private junk boat. Visit the floating market and the craft village, discovering local life and traditional activities: rice paper making, local handicrafts, and tasting regional specialties such as coconut candies, puffed rice cakes, and honey tea with longan flowers.

Enjoy lunch with the Kiet family in a beautiful traditional wooden house. Afterward, continue your journey on the large boat towards Vinh Long, located 170 km south of Saigon. Enjoy about 1 hour of cruising through the narrow arroyos, where you can relax in the hammocks and admire the picturesque landscape.

Day 15
Ho Chi Minh City - Siem Reap (B)

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Upon arrival at Siem Reap airport, you will be greeted by our guide and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy some free time in the afternoon to relax after your journey. Dinner on your own in Siem Reap and overnight stay at your hotel.

Included for the day: Breakfast, private car transfer to Ho Chi Minh City airport, Ho Chi Minh City – Siem Reap flight, greeting by your guide and transfer to your hotel.

Day 16
Siem Reap - visit Temples d'Angkor (B)

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at your hotel. The day will be dedicated to exploring the most iconic monuments of the Angkor site.

First, visit Angkor Thom, built by King Jayavarman VII at the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century. The name Angkor Thom means “the great city” and reflects the grandeur of the Khmer Empire.

In the afternoon, visit Angkor Wat, the largest and most beautiful temple of Angkor, built by Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. It was the city of monasteries, the spiritual heart, and the identity of the Khmer people. The temple showcases exceptional Khmer architecture, intricate, naturalistic, and full of symbolic meaning. It remains one of the most astonishing architectural masterpieces in the world today.

Lunch is not included during the visits. Return to Siem Reap in the late afternoon. Dinner on your own and overnight at the hotel.

Day 17
Siem Reap - Visit of the surroundings of Tonle Sap (B, L)

After breakfast at your hotel, visit Kampong Pluk Village on the edge of Tonle Sap, Cambodia’s Great Lake, where you can observe the life of the stilted villages, fishing techniques, fish farms, and private crocodile farms. Each year, the lake’s water level varies from 4 to 8 meters, flooding all the lands and forests in the region (from August to January). Depending on the season, you can explore these flooded forests in wooden canoes.

Lunch will be served at a local home in Prey Monty, a simple but typical Khmer meal. In the afternoon, enjoy a bike ride through Prey Monty Village, admiring the beauty of the Cambodian countryside and discovering seasonal agricultural activities and the daily life of local people. Learn to identify local plants and trees as you walk through the countryside. Return to Siem Reap in the late afternoon. Dinner on your own and overnight at the hotel.
