Bac Ha ethnic market

Overview

Discover the Meeting Place of Lao Cai’s Ethnic Groups

Located in Lao Cai province, the town of Bac Ha has around 50,000 inhabitants. Above all, it is the place where, every Sunday, people from the different ethnic groups of the province gather together. The so-called Flower Hmong are considered the hosts of the market, as they form the majority in Bac Ha.

Visiting the market is therefore an opportunity to see a great number of people in one place, dressed in their traditional costumes. Bac Ha market is truly a colorful spectacle. But there is more to Bac Ha than just the market: our tours can also take you trekking along the surrounding trails, where you will have the chance to taste the local specialty — plums!

The best time to visit? During Tet Festival, in January–February, when the surrounding hills are covered in white plum blossoms. Harvest season takes place in May and June.
