Nha Trang

Overview

Relax in the Land of the Cham

Today, Nha Trang is known almost exclusively for its bay and its 7-kilometer stretch of white sandy beach. For many, it’s the perfect place to soak up the sun and enjoy a dose of Vitamin D.

Yet beyond its idyllic coastline, Nha Trang also has a rich history worth exploring. The city once belonged to the Kingdom of Champa, which flourished from the 2nd to the 15th century, stretching from present-day Vung Tau to north of Hue. Throughout its existence, the Cham kingdom fought against repeated invasions from neighboring Khmer, Chinese, and Vietnamese forces. By the 15th century, Champa became a vassal of Đại Việt (“Great Viet” in Vietnamese). Though less monumental than Khmer heritage, traces of Cham civilization can still be found today.

Not far from Nha Trang lies My Son Sanctuary, which served as the spiritual capital of Champa from the 4th to the 13th century. In Nha Trang itself, you can admire the Po Nagar Temple, built in 781 to honor Yan Po Nagar, the legendary founder of the Cham kingdom.
