Hoi An is a small town in Quang Nam Province, located about 30 kilometers from Da Nang.
Once a thriving fishing port and an important hub for silk merchants from the 15th century onwards, Hoi An bears the traces of many cultural influences, still visible today in the architecture of its ancient town. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, the old town includes no fewer than 844 registered buildings of interest. Of course, you may not have the time or patience to see them all, but several remain absolute highlights: the Japanese Covered Bridge, built in 1593 to connect the Japanese and Chinese quarters; Tan Ky House, the oldest in Hoi An and the first to be recognized as a Historical Monument in 1985; and the Phuc Kien Pagoda, once the gathering place for the Fujian community.
Beyond these monuments, simply strolling through the ancient town is a must — during the day to admire the colorful façades, and after nightfall to marvel at the magical glow of the lanterns.
