Vietnam in One Week: 4 Itineraries by Traveller Profile (2026)

Table des matières

Seven days for a country that stretches over 1,600 km — you won’t be able to cover everything, of course. But with a well-built itinerary, a week is enough to grasp what matters most, and to come home with an irresistible urge to return.

From Hanoi, we accompany many travellers every year who arrive with exactly this constraint: seven days, and the determination to experience something meaningful. Here is what we advise them — and why each profile deserves its own itinerary.

Is one week in Vietnam enough for a first trip?

Seven days in Vietnam is short, but enough to come back transformed, as long as you don’t try to see everything.

Seven days in Vietnam is short. But it is enough to come back transformed. The condition: do not try to see everything.

Our core advice: choose a region, an atmosphere, a pace. It is far better to spend seven days in the North genuinely getting to know Hanoi, sailing among karst formations on Lan Ha Bay, and wandering through ethnic minority villages — than to sprint from north to south swallowing sites one after another.

Here are our four one-week itineraries, matched to your traveller profile.

What is the best itinerary for one week in Vietnam?

There is no single best itinerary for a week in Vietnam; the ideal week depends on your travel style and interests.

There is no single best itinerary for a week in Vietnam. The best week is the one that matches who you are: a lover of nature and culture, someone seeking peace and beaches, an adventurer at heart, or a family traveller. Here are four proposals that can each be personalised with our travel advisors.

Itinerary 1 — The Classic North (7 days)

Best for: first-time visitors who want to see the highlights without spreading themselves too thin.

Days 1–2 — Hanoi: arrival in the capital, exploration of the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, a water puppet show. Two days in Hanoi allow you to feel the city’s pulse without rushing.

Days 3–4 — Lan Ha Bay cruise: this is the experience our travellers mention most often when they describe their week. One or two nights aboard a junk, among karst islets, kayaking into sea caves, watching the sunrise over the water. Lan Ha Bay, less crowded than the main Halong Bay, offers a more serene and authentic atmosphere with its fishing villages. Discover our junk cruises on Lan Ha Bay.

Day 5 — Ninh Binh: the inland Halong Bay. On the way between the bay and Hanoi, step into the karst landscapes of Trang An by rowing boat, visit the ancient citadel of Hoa Lu, and take in the views from Bich Dong Pagoda. A dense and beautiful day.

Days 6–7 — Hanoi and departure: back in Hanoi, a morning at Dong Xuan market, an excursion to the pottery village of Bat Trang or the silk village of Van Phuc, a final evening by the lake with a bia hoi and the food addresses we will have shared along the way.

Worth noting: this itinerary requires no domestic flight. Everything runs from Hanoi by private vehicle — the most relaxed and most cost-effective option for seven days.

Itinerary 2 — The Adventure North: Hanoi and Ha Giang (7 days)

Best for: travellers who prefer wild landscapes to tourist sites, and who do not shy away from long roads.

Days 1–2 — Hanoi: arrival and discovery of the capital, taking time for lunch in a local canteen and wandering the Old Quarter lanes without an overloaded agenda.

Days 3–6 — The Ha Giang loop: the Dong Van global geopark, the vertiginous gorges of Ma Pi Leng Pass, H’mong villages clinging to mountain slopes, the Sunday market of Meo Vac. Four days that give the feeling of crossing into another world.

We recommend doing Ha Giang by private vehicle with an experienced local driver rather than by motorbike for travellers without prior experience of Asian mountain roads. The comfort is significantly better, and so is the safety.

Day 7 — Back to Hanoi: the return road from Ha Giang is long but beautiful. You cross rice valleys and authentic market towns before returning to the capital’s energy for a final night.

Itinerary 3 — Hanoi and the Centre: Hanoi, Hue and Hoi An (7 days)

Best for: heritage and gastronomy lovers, travellers who want Vietnam at a gentler pace.

Days 1–2 — Hanoi: arrival and discovery of the capital, before taking a domestic flight to Hue.

Days 3–4 — Hue: the UNESCO Imperial City, the Nguyen emperors’ tombs, Thien Mu Pagoda, the Perfume River at sunset. And above all: Hue’s cuisine, the richest and most distinctive in the country — bun bo Hue, banh khoai, banh beo served in tiny ceramic dishes. Do not leave Hue without eating well.

Days 5–7 — Hoi An: the old town with its silk lanterns, the Japanese Covered Bridge, the ancient merchant houses, cooking classes in restaurant-schools, the beach at An Bang by bicycle, tailor workshops that stitch an ao dai in 24 hours. Hoi An deserves at least three nights — do not let anyone convince you to spend only one. Explore our tailor-made tours of Northern and Central Vietnam to see itineraries that include this combination.

Worth noting: this itinerary requires one domestic flight (Hanoi–Hue). Return from Da Nang, or an option to continue south to Ho Chi Minh City.

Itinerary 4 — The South: Saigon, Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc (7 days)

Best for: travellers arriving via Ho Chi Minh City, those who love urban energy and beaches, or anyone travelling between December and March when the southern climate is at its finest.

Days 1–2 — Ho Chi Minh City: the War Remnants Museum, the Reunification Palace, the Cho Lon district and the Jade Emperor Pagoda, Ben Thanh Market, an evening on the rooftop bars of District 1. Ho Chi Minh City never sleeps and always surprises.

Days 3–4 — Mekong Delta: Can Tho and its floating market at dawn — one of the most striking images in all of Vietnam — boat rides along the coconut-shaded canals of Ben Tre, lunch with a local family, tropical fruit orchards. We need at least two nights here to go beyond a surface impression. Read our guide to the Mekong Delta and Can Tho to see what is possible.

Days 5–7 — Phu Quoc: Vietnam’s largest island, and the perfect place to end a southern circuit. White sand beaches, turquoise water, fresh seafood straight off the boat, and the best sunsets in the country. Three nights is ideal — long enough to explore the north of the island, snorkel around the Coral Islands, and still have time to do nothing at all.
