Dalat (Vietnam): Freshness in the Highlands

Table des matières

Situated at over 1,500 metres above sea level, Dalat holds a special place in the imagination of travellers. Far from the bustle of major cities and the tropical heat, this city in the Central Highlands captivates with its temperate climate, rolling landscapes and almost European atmosphere. Dalat remains a destination apart — ideal for slowing down and discovering another face of Vietnam.

It is a destination we particularly appreciate for its balance of nature, culture and gentle way of life, and one we readily recommend to travellers in search of authenticity and cool mountain air.

Understanding Dalat and Its Geography

Dalat on the Map

To properly locate Dalat, one must look towards the Tay Nguyen highlands, in Lam Dong province. On a map, the city of Dalat sits approximately 300 km north-east of Ho Chi Minh City. The road journey typically takes between 6 and 7 hours, depending on the route and traffic conditions, with magnificent scenery of mountains, coffee plantations and pine forests along the way.

This geographical position explains a great deal: the cooler climate, the lush vegetation and the city’s historical role as a hill station during the colonial era.

A City Shaped by Altitude and History

Founded by the French at the end of the 19th century, Da Lat was conceived as a place of rest. Villas, schools, convents and hotels still bear witness to that influence today. Unlike many other Vietnamese cities, Dalat developed without heavy industry, preserving a pleasant, verdant living environment.

What Is the Climate Like in Dalat, and When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The weather in Dalat is one of its greatest assets. Temperatures generally range between 15 and 25°C throughout the year, and evenings can be cool, particularly between November and February — a surprise for many travellers arriving from the south of the country.

The dry season, from November to April, is ideal for visiting Dalat. Days are sunny, the air is crisp and hiking is a pleasure. From May to October, the rainy season brings showers that are often short but intense, making the landscapes even greener and more romantic.

When to Go According to Your Interests

For those who love flowers and gardens, the beginning of the year is particularly charming. For travellers who enjoy a misty, poetic atmosphere, the end of the rainy season offers a Dalat wrapped in morning clouds — a favourite among photographers.

How to Get to Dalat?

The plane remains the fastest option, with daily direct flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Danang, allowing you to reach the heart of the highlands quickly.

For travellers seeking authenticity and spectacular scenery, the bus is an excellent alternative. Crossing mountains, pine forests and coffee plantations, the journey becomes an experience in itself. The most frequent connections link Dalat to Ho Chi Minh City, but also to Mui Ne and Nha Trang on the coast.

Thanks to recent road improvements, journey times have been significantly reduced: allow approximately 6 hours from Ho Chi Minh City and around 4 hours from Mui Ne — a welcome comfort for reaching Dalat in complete serenity.

What to See and Do in Dalat, Vietnam

Dalat Lake: The Peaceful Heart of the City

Dalat Lake, often called Xuan Huong Lake, is the centrepiece of the city. Lined with gardens, cafés and wide promenades, it can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Early in the morning, locals come here to exercise, while couples stroll along its banks at sunset.

This artificial lake contributes fully to the romantic atmosphere of Dalat and makes for a pleasant pause between visits.

Crazy House Vietnam: Architecture Like No Other

Among the most remarkable sites is the famous Crazy House Vietnam. Designed by architect Dang Viet Nga, this extraordinary building resembles a set from a fantasy tale. Winding staircases, organic forms, themed rooms — the visit is both playful and utterly disorienting.

Even though the site is now quite busy, it remains a striking highlight of any stay in Da Lat, particularly for travellers with a curiosity for unconventional architecture.

Temples, Pagodas and Colonial Heritage

Dalat is also home to several remarkable pagodas, including the Linh Phuoc Pagoda, famous for its ceramic mosaics. The old colonial buildings, Dalat railway station and a number of historic villas bear witness to the city’s past and are well worth a careful visit.

Dalat and Its Natural Surroundings

Waterfalls, Forests and Plantations

Around Dalat, nature is ever-present. Waterfalls such as Pongour and Elephant Falls, pine forests and rolling hills offer countless opportunities for excursions. We often advise setting aside at least a full day to explore the surroundings, away from the city centre.

Coffee, tea and flower plantations are also emblematic of the region. Dalat is one of Vietnam’s main horticultural centres, supplying flowers and vegetables to the entire country.

The accommodation offer is varied, ranging from small family guesthouses to charming hotels housed in former villas. Getting around Dalat is relatively straightforward — on foot in the centre, or by private car with driver for more distant excursions.
