Hoan Kiem Lake takes its name from a foundational Vietnamese legend telling of a sacred sword returned to a divine turtle after victory over invaders.
According to tradition, in the 15th century King Lê Lợi received a magical sword from the spirits to drive out the Chinese occupiers. After his victory, while boating on the lake, a famous turtle emerged from the water to reclaim the divine weapon. The king understood that his mission had been fulfilled and returned the sword.
The name Hoan Kiem literally means “Lake of the Returned Sword.” This legend is not merely a tourist tale. In Hanoi, it is deeply rooted in the collective imagination and in national history.

The Thê Húc Bridge (Bridge of the Rising Sun)
The red bridge of Hanoi, known as Thê Húc Bridge, symbolizes harmony by linking the city to Ngoc Son Temple, set on Hoan Kiem Lake.
It is impossible to separate the red bridge of Hanoi from Hoan Kiem Lake. Its vermilion color contrasts with the green of the water and surrounding vegetation, creating one of the most iconic images of Vietnam.
The bridge leads to Ngoc Son Temple, dedicated in particular to General Trần Hưng Đạo, a national hero. Crossing this bridge symbolically means leaving the urban hustle behind and entering a space of contemplation.
In practice, we recommend visiting the temple early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light is softer and crowds are smaller. The bridge then becomes an ideal place to observe life around the lake and to understand the importance of this lake in Hanoi’s urban balance.

Ngoc Son Temple
Connected to the shore of Hoan Kiem Lake by Thê Húc Bridge, Ngoc Son Temple seems to float between sky and water. This emblematic sanctuary of Hanoi was built in the 19th century on the site of the former Thuy Khanh Palace, before being fully renovated in 1865 by the scholar Nguyen Van Sieu.
Around the temple, a harmonious ensemble composed of the Pen Tower (Thap But), the Dai Nghien ink slab and Thê Húc Bridge forms a symbol-laden architectural complex where spirituality, literature and Vietnamese history meet.

Here, you discover the Hanoi way of life in all its spontaneity: families strolling, young artists performing, children laughing and the scent of street food drifting through the air. The promenade takes on the feel of an open-air gallery, with handicraft stalls, live portrait sketches and photography exhibitions.
